Onions may cause your eyes to water and your hands to smell (when you cut them). But this humble vegetable is packed with nutrition and it is known for its healing properties. It is cheap, plentiful and easily available throughout the year, in different varieties and colors. Now considered one of the superfoods, onions are delicious when cooked and flavorful as well. If you can eat them raw in salads they offer a host of health benefits; if not, you can cook them lightly or a lot and they still pack a punch and sweetness. Here is why you should make the most of onions and include them in your daily diet.

    • Anti-cancer – this bulbous vegetable is full of flavonoids and polyphenols that have cancer protective properties. Red, yellow and white onions of different spices are packed with micronutrients. As a rough and ready guide, remember the deeper the color of the onion, the more flavonoids it contains. Quercetin in onions has been known to inhibit prostate, breast, colon, lung, endometrial and ovarian cancer cells.
    • Blood thinning – onions have important blood thinning properties and so guard against blood clots that can cause heart attack or stroke. Onions contain thiosulfinates that have this effect. But this substance is more prevalent in raw onions than cooked ones. In fact, if you are already on blood thinners, avoid eating too much of raw onions.
    • Digestion – onions contain fiber that helps with the digestive process. Additionally, they contain oligofructose, a soluble fiber, which increases good bacteria in the digestive system and helps prevent diarrhea and may also reduce the risk of developing gastric ulcers.
    • Blood sugar – onions contain sulfur and increase insulin production in the body, reducing blood sugar levels and so are particularly good for diabetics.
    • Increased bone density – women in menopause ofter suffer from reduced bone density levels, leaving them at greater risk of fractures. Onions help lower the risk of fractures.
    • High blood pressure – this vegetable can help reduce the risk of developing hypertension thanks to its sulfur content.
    • Anti-inflammatory – both sulfur and quercetin have anti-inflammatory effects. Quercetin, in particular, can help relax muscles in the airways and so reduce asthma symptoms.
    • Immune system booster – polyphenols in onions help improve the immune system and offer protection against free radicals. Quercetin again reduces the risk of the body producing histamines that are responsible for allergic reactions like hay fever, sneezing, and even hives.
  • Anti-bacterial – onions have an anti-bacterial effect and can reduce the risk of serious stomach infections such as those caused by E.coli and salmonella.

Unless you are allergic to onions or they increase the effect of the blood thinners that you may be taking, you must include onions in your daily diet.
